Yes, BC law requires two witnesses during your marriage ceremony. They can be friends, family members, or even strangers if needed.
In BC, the main difference between a Commissioner and an Officiant lies in the level of personalization and ceremony involvement. A Commissioner is a government-appointed official who focuses solely on the legal registration of the marriage. Their role is to ensure all necessary paperwork is completed, making them an ideal choice for couples seeking a simple, no-frills legal process.
On the other hand, an Officiant takes the lead in crafting and conducting a personalized wedding ceremony. Whether religious or non-religious, an Officiant helps create a ceremony that reflects the couple's unique story, values, and love. From multicultural traditions to meaningful rituals, an Officiant can design a memorable and heartfelt experience, making your wedding day feel truly special and one-of-a-kind.
If you're looking for a wedding ceremony filled with personal touches and meaning, an Officiant offers the perfect opportunity to make your day unforgettable.

No, getting married at City Hall is not required. Those ceremonies are only available on select weekdays and come with separate logistics for officiants and photographers. Instead, our Signing Ceremony package offers a more flexible and meaningful alternative. It includes an officiant, all legal paperwork, photography, and access to a private signing room.
Currently, our signing room is located in Vancouver. However, our new dedicated ceremony space, The Ensora • Ceremony Space, will open in Richmond by late October 2025. It offers a serene and minimalist venue for couples who prefer privacy and beauty without the restrictions of City Hall.

Each package is designed to meet a different need:
Classic Celebration is a complete wedding ceremony with all the formal elements. It is ideal for couples looking for a fully personalized experience. It includes optional features such as your love story, cultural or unity rituals, ceremony rehearsal, and more.
Elopement Ceremony is a shorter, more intimate celebration, often with just the couple and a few close guests. It keeps things simple but still includes a heartfelt ceremony.
Signing Ceremony is purely for legal purposes. No audience, no ceremonial extras: just the couple, two witnesses, and the officiant to sign the papers and make the marriage official.

While we recommend booking as early as possible, especially for weekends, holidays, and peak wedding seasons, we’re also happy to accommodate last-minute requests, even with as little as one day's notice, to ensure you have a beautiful and meaningful ceremony.
We intentionally don’t offer word-for-word script approvals, and that’s a deliberate choice. Over the years, we’ve found that when couples try to fine-tune every line, it often adds unnecessary stress and pulls them out of the emotional flow of the day.
Instead, we invite you to voluntarily share your story and values through our questionnaire. We then thoughtfully weave in what you’ve shared to craft a ceremony that feels heartfelt and aligned with your energy.
With over 2000 weddings of experience, we’ve seen how beautiful things unfold when couples trust us to guide the tone and flow. Many even describe the moment of hearing their ceremony for the first time as a kind of joyful surprise, like unwrapping a meaningful gift that was made just for them.
We encourage you to let go of the pressure to control every word, so you can fully be present, supported, and emotionally connected to the moment.
Yes, we provide bilingual ceremony services in English, Cantonese and Mandarin to cater to a diverse range of clients and ensure a personalized and meaningful experience for all.
Unity rituals are symbolic acts performed during a wedding ceremony to represent the joining of two people, or two families into one. These rituals visually express the couple’s commitment, connection, and shared future. Common examples include lighting a unity candle, pouring sand into one vessel, or tying a handfasting cord.
At Vancity Officiant, we offer a curated selection of meaningful unity rituals that can be added to your ceremony. One of our signature options is the Pawfect Witness ritual, an adorable and heartfelt way to include your dog in this special moment. All our rituals are designed to bring beauty, symbolism, and a unique touch to your wedding day.

Yes, we do. While we are based in Vancouver, we regularly travel across the Greater Vancouver Area and the Lower Mainland, including the Fraser Valley, Whistler, and the Sea to Sky Corridor, depending on availability and scheduling.
If you have a specific destination in mind, feel free to inquire. We’ll do our best to accommodate your plans wherever possible.
Travel is included for ceremonies held in Richmond, Vancouver (excluding downtown and UBC area), Burnaby, and locations within 15km of postal code V3X.
Outside of these zones, a travel fee may apply depending on distance and scheduling.
At Home: We’re happy to come to your home and conduct the legal ceremony right there. Many couples choose this option for its warmth, comfort, and privacy, especially for intimate elopements or signing ceremonies.
Public Parks: Getting married in a public park is also an option, but you’ll need to check with the city’s local bylaws. Some municipalities (like Vancouver, Burnaby, or Richmond) may require a special event permit or park booking for any ceremony or specific setup. Others may allow small gatherings with minimal setup on a first-come basis. We recommend contacting the city or parks board ahead of time to confirm what’s needed.
Let us know your preferred park or address, and we’ll help guide you through any considerations.

Our pet-inclusive ceremonies are designed to honour not only the role your animal companion plays on your wedding day, but also the place they hold in your life and family. We can guide your pet down the aisle, help them be part of a ring exchange or vow moment, or include a symbolic blessing to celebrate their well-being and presence in your new chapter together. Even if your beloved pet has passed away, we can still honour them in spirit through special wording, photos or symbolic rituals.
Learn more about how we design pet-inclusive blessings through one our Pawfect Witness™: Kam Kam|A Tiny Tortoise, A Big Love
No, pets cannot be official witnesses on your marriage licence in British Columbia. The law requires two adult humans to serve as legal witnesses when signing. A pawprint, no matter how heartfelt, does not replace a legal signature.
That’s exactly why we created Pawfect Witness™. We know how deeply pet parents wish their beloved animal could officially witness their wedding. This ritual was designed to honour that wish in a symbolic but powerful way, whether through a pawprint unity certificate, a blessing gesture, or even a tribute for a pet who has passed away. It fills the emotional gap in a way that legal paperwork never could.
Absolutely. Dogs are the most common guests of honour in our pet-friendly ceremonies. Whether they walk down the aisle, sit beside you during the signing, or take part in a blessing moment, we’ll work with you to include them in a calm and meaningful way. If you're not sure what role is best for your dog, we can provide ideas that match their personality and energy level.
We’ll always take time to support your pet’s comfort. See how you can include your dog in loving, low-pressure ways through our blog post: Include Your Pet in a Meaningful Wedding Ceremony
The Pawfect Witness™ is a heartfelt way to include your pet, whether they’re walking beside you, waiting at home, or already watching from above, in your wedding ceremony. It’s not just about their physical presence. It’s about honouring the love they’ve given you, and the life you’ve built together as a family with pets.
This is also a charity-driven offering. When couples make a donation of any amount to an animal organization of their choice, we include the Pawfect Witness™ as part of their ceremony with no additional fee. It’s our way of turning your act of love into something even bigger.
This may take the form of a Pawprint Unity Certificate Ritual, where your pet’s pawprint joins yours on a keepsake document, or a Tribute Blessing Ritual that honours a pet who has already passed. No matter the form, it’s a beautiful reminder that love never leaves.
For Kevin and Kit, who both share a deep love and respect for animals, this isn’t just a service. It’s a promise to make sure your most loyal companions are seen, included, and blessed.

Any pet who holds a place in your heart can be included in your ceremony. Dogs and cats are the most common, but we have also celebrated with rabbits, birds, turtles, and even a tortoise named Kam Kam at a downtown Vancouver wedding.
Whether your companion walks beside you, waits patiently at home, or lives on in memory, we will help you honour their presence. You may include them with a live appearance, a Pawprint Unity Certificate ritual, with a blessing from your Officiant. Pets who have passed away can also be remembered through a Tribute Blessing Ritual, because their love continues to be part of your journey.
Pawfect Witness™ is not just about inviting pets to attend your wedding. It is a meaningful way to celebrate the quiet loyalty and unconditional love they bring into your life. Every ceremony is thoughtfully crafted to reflect your bond with your animal companion, no matter what species they are.

To prepare your pet for the wedding day, start by planning for both the ceremony and what happens after. Most pets feel more secure when there’s a familiar person by their side. Choose someone your pet trusts to be their handler for the day, ideally someone who knows their habits, moods, and how to keep them calm.
If your ceremony is outdoors or in a new space, consider bringing your pet for a quick visit beforehand. Let them explore the area, sniff around, and get comfortable with the setting. On the day itself, remember to bring essentials like water, snacks, waste bags, and a comfortable leash or harness. Outfits or accessories should be soft, breathable, and not distracting to your pet.
One of the most important parts of planning is what happens after the ceremony. Many BC venues that offer food service (such as restaurants, banquet halls, or cafes) do not allow animals indoors due to health regulations. If your pet cannot stay for the reception, arrange for someone to take them home or to a nearby pet-friendly space once the ceremony ends. Planning this in advance ensures your pet remains safe and cared for without stress.
It happens more often than you’d think. Many venues, especially those with food services, have strict no-pet policies. But that doesn’t mean your beloved companion has to be left out of your marriage story.
That’s exactly why we’re opening The Ensora • Ceremony Space, an intimate private ceremony venue in Richmond designed for couples who want to include their pets in a legal or small scale ceremony. It’s not just pet-allowed, it’s pet-loved. The space will be available starting end of October 2025.
If your venue has restrictions, having a private elopement at a park or signing ceremony with your pet at The Ensora is a beautiful solution. Your furry, feathered, or scaled friend still gets to witness the moment that truly matters.

Every Pawfect Witness™ ceremony is more than a celebration — it’s a chance to give back. When couples choose to include this add-on, we ask them to select an animal-focused charity and make a meaningful donation. This act of kindness turns their ceremony into a blessing not just for their own pet, but for animals in need.
In the first six months since launching, this program has already raised over CA$8,000. Thanks to our amazing couples, donations have gone to local and national organizations including:
and more......!
Each donation directly supports animals who are waiting for healing, shelter, or a second chance at life.
By choosing Pawfect Witness™, your love story becomes part of something bigger. Together we are building a community of compassion that reaches far beyond the ceremony.

The Chinese Tea Ceremony is one of the most meaningful traditions in Asian weddings. It represents respect, gratitude, and unity between generations. A Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant® brings the skills to turn this tradition into a guided, emotionally resonant experience.
At Vancity Officiant, Officiant Kit Chan is not only a Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant®, but also fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. With her Asian cultural background, she understands the deep significance behind each bow, each cup of tea, and each title spoken. This allows her to bridge tradition and modern ceremony design in a way that respects heritage while making space for heartfelt connection.
Life-Cycle Celebrants are trained to create rituals that honor identity, family values, and transitions. When applied to a tea ceremony, this means:
Explaining the meaning of the ritual to elders and guests in their preferred language
Guiding each part of the ceremony with presence and clarity
Ensuring that your tea ceremony is not rushed or treated as a side activity
Creating an atmosphere that feels sacred, warm, and deeply personal
For many couples, this is the only time their families formally meet. Having someone to hold space for that moment makes all the difference.
A modern Chinese Tea Ceremony keeps the heart of tradition while adapting to today’s multicultural weddings. At its core, this ritual is about expressing gratitude and respect to elders through the act of serving tea.
In contemporary settings, especially in Canada where many couples and families are a blend of cultures, the tea ceremony is often simplified and thoughtfully reinterpreted. It’s not just about following tradition for tradition’s sake, it’s about creating a moment of connection that everyone, regardless of background, can understand and feel.
At Vancity Officiant, we help design tea ceremonies that honour the symbolism and values of Chinese heritage while making them more accessible. We use clear, modern explanations in Cantonese, Mandarin, or English, depending on your family’s needs. The language and flow of the ritual are carefully adjusted so that every guest, young or old, can appreciate the meaning behind the gestures.
We also guide you through simple yet heartfelt blessings that don’t rely on formal scripts. These words are easy to say and carry deep emotion. They help you express respect, love, and unity in a way that feels genuine and true to who you are.
Our modern tea ceremonies are warm, inclusive, and emotionally rich. It is a bridge between generations, cultures, and hearts.

Yes. Whether you're a visitor or a Canadian resident, the legal marriage process in British Columbia is the same. As long as both of you are over 19, entering the marriage willingly, and can present valid ID (like a passport), you can get legally married in Vancouver. You’ll need to apply for a BC marriage licence, which is valid for 90 days and can be used anywhere in the province.
If you're planning to use your marriage certificate in your home country (for immigration, household registration, or legal purposes), you may need to request an apostille (Hague certification) or legalization documents. We can assist with this process to ensure your marriage is recognized both in Canada and abroad.
If you'd like guidance through every step, from legal paperwork to ceremony planning, feel free to get in touch with us or send us a message on WhatsApp.
You cannot apply for a British Columbia marriage licence online or from overseas. At least one person must be physically in BC to apply in person at a marriage licence issuer’s office, with valid government-issued photo ID (such as a passport). The licence is valid for 90 days.
The good news is that the process is fast and simple. The marriage licence can be issued on the spot in less than 30 minutes. As long as one partner arrives in BC at least one day before the wedding, there is usually no issue. In some cases, even applying on the same day as the ceremony is possible if timing allows.
We’re happy to guide you through this step and help you find the nearest or most convenient issuing location based on your travel plans. You can contact us here or message us directly via WhatsApp if you’d like support.
To get legally married in British Columbia, you must present primary government-issued photo ID for both parties when applying for the licence at the marriage licence issuer (such as a passport).
If either of you has been previously married, you may be asked to provide proof of divorce when applying for your marriage licence. However, not all licence issuers request it, and there is some information online suggesting it is always required, so it's best to check directly with the issuer when you make your appointment.
Importantly, on the wedding day itself, your officiant does not need to see your ID or any documents. Only the official marriage licence is required at the time of the ceremony.
Yes. Many couples fly into Vancouver, BC only a few days before their wedding, and we can still provide a legal marriage signing or elopement ceremony. To make sure we’re available, we recommend booking us first, then applying for your BC Marriage Licence once you arrive (the licence is valid for 3 months and can be picked up in person across BC). With your licence ready, we will guide you through a smooth and heartfelt ceremony even on short notice.
If you're coming from overseas, we make it simple for you to get legally married in Vancouver. All essential legal paperwork to register your marriage in British Columbia is included in our service. We take care of preparing, completing, and submitting the documents on your behalf, so you don’t have to worry about the details.
If your home country requires apostille (Hague certification) or legalization for your Canadian marriage certificate to be officially recognized, we can assist with that as well. This process involves additional steps and government filing, and a separate fee will apply if you authorize us to manage it for you.
