A Pet-Inclusive Wedding Ceremony with Dogs, Cats, Horses, and a Bunny | A Vancity Officiant Ceremony Story

When Tina first reached out to us, she told us she was interested in incorporating Pawfect Witness™ into her and Howard's Intimate Elopement ceremony.
At first, we thought we had a fairly clear picture of what that might look like. Perhaps a beloved dog, a paw print on a certificate, and a meaningful way to include an important companion in the wedding.
As our conversations continued, however, we quickly realised this was not a story about a single pet.
Tina and Howard had built a life that included Chibi the dog, Shimo the cat, Kuri the bunny, Juno the horse, and the memory of Tino, a horse who had been part of Tina's life for twelve years before crossing the Rainbow Bridge. Beyond that were the aquarium residents, including shrimp and two zebra snails.
The more we listened, the more we understood that this was not a wedding where a pet happened to be included. This was a family where animals were already woven into everyday life.
What stood out most was not the number of animals. It was the care Tina and Howard had for every one of them. Whether it was a horse, a rabbit, a cat, a dog, or even the smallest life living in an aquarium, each relationship carried meaning. Because of that, we felt there was a responsibility to honour them thoughtfully.
More importantly, we wanted the ceremony to reflect not only Tina's bond with these animals, but also the life that Tina and Howard were building together. This was not about celebrating individual relationships. It was about acknowledging the family they had chosen to create.
Designing a Pawfect Witness™ Ceremony
One of the questions we often ask ourselves when designing a ceremony is simple:
What is the relationship that needs to be acknowledged?
For Tina and Howard, the answer felt surprisingly clear.
The challenge was never deciding which animals should be included. The challenge was figuring out how to honour all of them without leaving anyone behind. Every time we explored one idea, another beloved family member appeared, and every one of them belonged in the story.
As we worked through different possibilities together, it became clear that a traditional pet-inclusive approach would not fully reflect their family. A single paw print or one symbolic gesture would have left part of the story untold.
Instead, we began exploring how each relationship could be represented in a way that felt genuine to Tina and Howard's life.
Remembering Tino

Tino presented a unique question.
Although he would never physically attend the ceremony, that did not make his place in Tina's life any smaller.
During one of our planning conversations, Kevin asked a simple question:
"Do you still have something that belonged to him?"
That conversation eventually led us to a horseshoe.
Not as decoration.
Not as a prop.
But as a symbol of a relationship that had already left its mark.
The horseshoe would be stamped onto the unity certificate alongside the paw prints, allowing Tino's presence to be acknowledged in a way that felt tangible and deeply personal.
Including Juno From Afar
Juno created a different challenge.
She remains an important part of Tina's life, but she would not be attending the wedding.
As we explored different possibilities, the idea that felt most natural was a small strand of Juno's mane. It was simple, quiet, and deeply meaningful. A small piece of Juno would become part of the unity certificate, standing alongside every other family member represented that day.

What made this detail especially meaningful was that Tino and Juno were represented in two very different ways. Tino was represented through something he once wore, while Juno was represented through something that is still part of her today.
One reflected memory.
The other reflected a relationship that continues in the present.
Together, both belonged on the certificate.
Bringing Everyone Together on the Unity Certificate

By the time we reached the final design, the unity certificate had become much more than a document.
It carried paw prints from Chibi, Shimo, and Kuri, a horseshoe imprint representing Tino, and a strand of Juno's mane. Behind each of those elements was a relationship that had helped shape Tina and Howard's life together.

The certificate became a reflection of their family as it truly exists.
Not a simplified version.
Not a wedding version.
The real one.
A Family Witnessed In Full

For Tina and Howard, marriage was never simply about two people. It was about bringing together the family they already shared, including the animals who had shaped their daily lives, offered companionship through different seasons, and quietly witnessed their relationship grow.
Looking back, this may be one of the clearest examples of what Pawfect Witness™ was created to do.
Not to add animals into a ceremony.
But to acknowledge the relationships that already exist.
Their marriage brought not only two people together, but an entire little family into one shared life.
The ceremony simply made sure every member of that family was acknowledged.
A Few Moments From This Pawfect Witness™ Ceremony
We are grateful to Somethink Studio for documenting this celebration and for taking the time to genuinely understand the philosophy behind Pawfect Witness™. Their thoughtful approach allowed them to capture not only the ceremony itself, but also the relationships and small moments that gave the day its meaning.
